Election Tribunal: Accept Court Judgement, Buhari to Opposition Parties

Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.), the president, asked the opposition parties to accept the court’s decision regarding the election on Sunday in Abuja, even as the electoral tribunal hearing gets underway on Tuesday, May 30. According to Buhari’s farewell speech, which was broadcast on the Nigerian Television Authority early on Sunday.

In his Easter Day speech on April 7, Buhari pushed for a similar viewpoint, urging Nigerians who were upset with the results of the polls held on February 25 and March 18 to “wait patiently and allow our legal system to run its course.”

The APC candidate Bola Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes, according to INEC. They further announced him as the victor of the presidential election at 4 am, March 1 of 2023.

According to the commission, Peter Obi of the Labour Party received 6,101,533 votes, placing him second behind Atiku, who received 6,984,520 votes. Tinubu’s win was challenged before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal by Atiku, Obi, and a few other parties. Majority of these parties alongside citizens disapproved of the INEC results.

Pre-hearing began on May 8 and the formal hearings were only scheduled for May 30 last Tuesday by the tribunal.

All of the Presidential Candidates and their political parties were commended by Buhari for their “doggedness and resilience.” Particularly in appealing the election results to the courts and for having faith in our legal system.

According to him-

“In the course of the campaigns, we had argued and disagreed on how to make Nigeria better but we never disagreed or had any doubts that Nigeria has to be better.

“As your President, I call on all of us to bring to bear the strength of our individualism, the power of our unity, the convictions of our beliefs to make Nigeria work better and together with one spirit and one purpose.”
