Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has finally addressed the persistent rumours surrounding her relationship with singer Janelle Monáe, her close friend. Speculation about their romantic involvement has circulated since their initial meeting at the 2014 Met Gala. This was just after Nyong’o’s triumphant win for her role in “12 Years a Slave.”

In a recent cover story for Rolling Stone magazine, Nyong’o acknowledged why people might think they are romantically linked, but she stopped short of outright denying the rumours. She expressed her understanding of the public’s perception, noting Monáe’s undeniable magnetism. Nyong’o emphasized that she doesn’t mind being associated with Monáe in any capacity, highlighting their strong bond.

Reflecting on their first encounter when Lupita was still navigating the new Hollywood landscape, she recounted Monáe’s genuine warmth and support. Monáe approached her and shared a heartfelt hug, expressing pride in Nyong’o’s accomplishments and extending a sincere offer of friendship. Nyong’o revealed that Monáe took her phone, saved her number and made it clear that she was there for her.

Despite their deep friendship, Lupita admitted that she doesn’t know everything about Monáe, emphasizing the artist’s enigmatic nature and the allure of her artistry.

While Lupita is currently dating television host Selema Masekela, Monáe came out as pansexual in 2018 and non-binary in 2022. Monáe has been an unwavering advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. However, she maintains a staunch commitment to privacy regarding their personal life.

Janelle shared with Rolling Stone that they have an agreement with themselves to keep that aspect of their life private. This policy allows them to discuss their identity and sexuality without divulging intimate details.
