Messi and Mbappe - Lyon defeats PSG

Lyon defeated PSG 1-0 at Parc des Princes in Ligue 1 to hand the defending champions their fifth loss in their previous nine games overall and their second straight league loss. With the victory, Lyon moves up to ninth place in the standings, while PSG maintains first place, six points ahead of RC Lens. The erratic string of results has sparked questions about Christophe Galtier’s managerial abilities.

At the Parc des Princes, Lyon defeated PSG 1-0 thanks to a goal from Bradley Barcola. The outcome condemned the Paris team to a second straight league loss after their loss to Rennes before the break. After five losses in their last nine games in all competitions, Christophe Galtier’s team is under increasing pressure.

Early on in the game, PSG appeared to be the superior team.

They sought to keep Lyon confined to their own half and produce opportunities for their main attackers. Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi combined well in and around the Lyon penalty area, giving the home team several chances to take the lead early in the game.
Once the initial PSG pressure receded, Lyon was able to re-enter the game and generate their own opportunities. Gianluigi Donnarumma fouled Alexandre Lacazette in the box, giving them a wonderful chance to score from the spot, but the Frenchman missed the post.

After the break, PSG once again prevailed, but Lyon managed to get back into the match because the Parisians were unable to generate chances and keep up the pressure. Bradley Barcola, a product of the academy, gave the visitors the lead in the 56th minute. To start the scoring, Barcola connected with Sael Kumbedi’s cutback and slid the ball into the far corner.

After losing to Rennes prior to the break, PSG manager Christophe Galtier made a few adjustments in an attempt to get his team’s offensive to gel, but to no avail.
