A recent discussion on Facebook has sparked a heated debate among Nigerians, with some expressing the belief that family planning goes against God’s will. The conversation, which took place on Sunday, May 28, was initiated by a user who questioned the advisability of family planning in “Godly marriages.” Several respondents argued that practising family planning equates to obstructing God’s plans.

One woman firmly asserted,

The Bible says to go into the world and multiply. Engaging in family planning means thwarting the plan of God. Therefore, God blesses those who give birth every year.”

The concept of family planning, aimed at enabling individuals and couples to make informed choices regarding the timing and spacing of their children, has long been a topic of discussion. However, for some Nigerians, this notion clashes with deeply-held religious convictions.

While proponents of family planning argue that it allows couples to better provide for their existing children, pursue educational and career aspirations, and improve the overall quality of family life, opponents view it as synonymous with the act of murdering unborn children—a grave sin according to their religious beliefs.

This divergence of opinions highlights the complex intersection of faith, culture and personal choices within Nigerian society. As Nigeria grapples with population growth, limited resources and economic challenges, discussions surrounding family planning have become increasingly important. Advocates emphasize the positive impact of informed reproductive decision-making on maternal and child health, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

As the conversation continues, it is evident that the compatibility of family planning with divine will remains a profoundly contentious topic. However, through respectful dialogue and a deeper understanding of various viewpoints, Nigerians hope to find common ground and navigate this sensitive issue with compassion and empathy for all.
