Oyo State Government has announced a strategic partnership with neighbouring states to strengthen border security against bandits entering the South-West region from northern Nigeria.
Governor Seyi Makinde had previously highlighted concerns about bandits using Oyo State as a gateway into the region. Oyo shares borders with Kwara, Ogun, and Osun states, making it a critical area for regional security efforts.
Fatai Owoseni, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, disclosed this initiative while addressing journalists after the state security council meeting on Tuesday.
Owoseni assured residents that the government is fully committed to safeguarding lives and property, urging them to carry out their daily activities without fear.
“Oyo state government is collaborating with neighboring states to ensure our borders are secure. We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to protect our people,” Owoseni said.
To bolster the state’s security framework, Owoseni revealed plans for expanded security council meetings involving local government chairmen and traditional rulers. This approach aims to integrate grassroots leadership into the security network for more effective monitoring and response.
“The essence of this is to ensure that we take security to the grassroots. The local government administration in Oyo is the third tier of government and is the closest to the people. In the same vein, traditional rulers are close to the people and know most people in their domains.
“By integrating them into the security network, we are taking security to the grassroots and carrying everyone along. Security is everybody’s business, and we all have a role to play in ensuring that our state is safe from the antics of bandits and other criminal elements,” Owoseni said.
