The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has once again expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s escalating poverty rates, drawing a sharp contrast with the significant progress achieved by other developing nations.
He made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at the inaugural All MBA Students Conference hosted by the Lagos Business School.
Speaking on the conference’s theme, “Execution as a Competitive Edge,” the former Governor of Anambra State emphasised that while strategic planning is crucial, it is ultimately meaningless without effective and disciplined implementation.
He argued that tangible results are driven by competent, responsible leadership characterised by capacity, compassion, and integrity, which are essential for the committed execution of sound policies.
Obi pointed to China, India, and Vietnam as exemplary cases where disciplined execution under dedicated leadership has yielded remarkable outcomes. During the Millennium Development Goals era from 2000 to 2015 and the ongoing Sustainable Development Goals period, these nations made historic strides in poverty reduction.
Through consistent policy implementation, China successfully lifted over 430 million citizens out of poverty, India elevated 270 million, and Vietnam improved the lives of 45 million people, substantially enhancing their Human Development Index.
In stark contrast, Obi lamented that Nigeria and much of Sub-Saharan Africa have failed to achieve similar results despite committing to the same global development frameworks. He noted with regret that while these nations are lifting millions out of poverty, more Nigerians are falling into economic hardship. He highlighted the alarming statistic that over 130 million Nigerians are currently classified as multidimensionally poor, underscoring the urgent need for improved governance and execution of people-oriented policies.
