Police: Nine Dead in Soccer Match at El Salvador Stadium Stampede

Nine people were killed in a crowd at El Salvador stadium. Soccer fans had gathered to watch a local tournament on Saturday at the stadium according to the police. According to the post on Twitter by the National Civil Police-

“The number of deaths after the stampede at the Cuscatlan Stadium amounts to nine”.

Security officials also noted that “several” injured people, including at least two in critical condition, are in local hospitals. Initial reports say fans were pouring into a stadium in San Salvador to watch the match between Alianza and FAS.

El Salvador’s Interior Minister, Juan Carlos Bidegain said first responders from the civil protection service were on the scene. They also did their best to care for those affected by the incident. Hundreds of police and soldiers gathered at the stadium to assist in keeping order. This was as ambulance sirens blared, interrupting the match and rescue workers evacuating the stadium.

Health Minister Francisco Alabi said the country’s hospital network was “providing medical care to all patients” in the aftermath of the stampede.

The tragedy comes seven months after 135 people, including more than 40 children, died in a post-football-match rush in Malang, Indonesia.
