U-17 AFCON Failure: Should Coach Ugbade Be Sacked ?

Following the Golden Eaglets’ exit from the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria in the quarter-final round and failure to qualify for the U-17 World Cup, many believe the best way to go will be to fire the head Coach, Nduka Ugbade.

The team beat Zambia 1-0 in their first game but lost 1-0 to Morocco in their second fixture.

However, a hard-fought 3-2 win against South Africa saw them progress into the last eight before losing to Burkina Faso.

Despite the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, Ikhana, who led Enyimba to the 2003 CAF Champions League title, believes Ugbade should continue with the team.

“Ugbade has won the World Cup before with the U-17 and has been with the team for years,” Ikhana said on Brila FM’s Sports Machine. “I think he should be given another opportunity to be with the team. He is a good coach,  playing up to the quarter-finals; I don’t think the coach has done poorly. ”

Also, Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju said sacking Ugbade was not the best decision to take, noting that the coach paraded young stars that could progress into the senior teams in the future.

“He has done well, the tournament is for developmental purposes, but every football fan wants the coach to win all games, which is why the job is difficult. Everybody will praise you when you are doing very well, but when a coach loses a match, they call for your sack.
The NFF has not yet decided if Nduka Ugbade will keep his job. Meanwhile, Senegal will take on Morocco in the final of the U-17 AFCON.
