The House of Representatives has urged the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to sue state governors who run caretaker committees in Local Governments.

The lower chamber encouraged Fagbemi to take legal action against any state that ends the unexpired terms of local government officials.

The House also requested the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to cease all allocations to local governments led by unelected individuals.

Ademorin Kuye moved a motion of urgent public urgency on Tuesday, which was followed by this resolution.

Recalls that the federal government is suing states over local government authority.

According to Kuye’s motion, 21 states presently have caretaker committees governing their local governments.

He called the scenario as an insult to democracy and the Constitution, which ensures the term of local government elected officials.

He said:

“The number of states acting with impunity and in utter disregard of the constitution continues to increase, as not less than 21 state governors are currently running local government councils with caretaker committees.”

The House accepted the motion without debate.
