Super Eagles defender Williams Troost-Ekong has scored for the first time in Serie A, ending a long-awaited goal drought spanning 73 appearances.

The Nigerian defender plays for Italian club Salernitana on loan from Watford.

At the time Troost-Ekong arrived at the Italian club in January, the club was just above the relegation zone.

In Ekong’s first game, he helped the club to beat Lecce 2-1, but two games later, he injured his knee, forcing him to miss all games played from the middle of March.

Troost-Ekong had previously featured in 65 games across two seasons for Udinese without managing to score a single goal.

Troost-Ekong found the back of the net for the first time in 73 appearances in a match-winning strike against Udinese.

With their Serie A status secured weeks ago, Salernitana will conclude their 2022/2023 campaign with an away fixture against relegated Cremonese in their final match.

Troost-Ekong, the super eagles’ vice-captain, will hope to be part of the squad to play AFCON qualifiers for Nigeria.
