Nigerian singer 9ice has shocked fans with a bold revelation about his spiritual beliefs, declaring himself a Babalawo while stating that the devil controls music.
Akande Abolore Adegbola Alexander, popularly known as 9ice, stirred controversy during an interview with Nancy Isime on The Nancy Isime Show. The singer revealed that he doesn’t identify as a Christian or Muslim but as a traditional herbalist, insisting that music is under the devil’s control.
Devil controls music. Devil is the choirmaster. I am not Christian, I’m not Muslim, I’m an herbalist. I tell people, and they run away from me. I’m African. That’s what I practice. I have found my own light in my own way,” he said.
Referencing Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, 9ice explained that just like Fela, who often visited Ogun shrines and was misunderstood, he believes Africans have their own divine messages. He quoted,
God said, ‘I will never come to you in a different language from your people. You will understand later that this black continent is for black people, and we have our own messages.”
In the same interview, 9ice opened up about a severe spiritual attack he suffered between 2009 and 2010, during which he vomited blood for six months. Despite medical checks, doctors couldn’t find any ailment. This ordeal pushed him to embrace Ifa, a traditional Yoruba spirituality, for protection.
I was in my house vomiting blood for six months. It wasn’t a medical condition. The first time I experienced Ifa was during that battle, and it saved me. I just wish I had known Ifa earlier,” he shared.
