Nigeria’s U-20 team has qualified for the quarter-finals of the U-20 world cup after beating host country Nigeria in the round of 16.
The Flying Eagles, led by head coach Ladan Bosso beat Nigeria’s football nemesis 2-0 in their backyard to end Nigeria’s constant spate of defeats to Argentina.
After a goalless first half, the Flying Eagles opened the scoring in the 61st minute through Ibrahim Beji Muhammad. Haliru Sarki Lawal then ensured there was no way back for Argentina when he headed home from close range in added time to seal qualification for the Bosso’s side.
This is the first time the Flying Eagles will defeat a South American team at the U-20 World Cup since their debut in 1983.
The Flying Eagles will now take on Ecuador or South Korea in the quarter-finals slated for Sunday, May 4.
In Wednesday’s other round of 16 games, Brazil beat Tunisia 4-1, while Italy edged England 2-1. The competition has one remaining African team, Gambia. They face Uruguay today in their round-of-16 game.
