Job Description
The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring all accounting and financial duties are performed according to established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Manage an accurate financial administration (creditors, debtors, salary administration, ledgers) and monitor the cash flow, the goods flow, accounts, and other financial transactions.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of periodic management reports to aid management decision-making process.
- Prepare periodic financial reports, ensuring compliance with defined accounting policies and financial reporting standards.
- Perform financial analysis as required, and reports at the Company’s regional offices as required.
- Work with the Head of Finance in the preparation of setting up the company budgets for the next financial year.
- Ensure the invoices are controlled and approved by the line management before processing in the accounting system.
- Developed a system for the maintenance of financial records, making use of current technologies.
- Prepare and ensure prompt remission of all statutory payments including VAT, PAYE tax, and employee, and Company pension contributions.
- Liaise with auditors/ tax consultants and external auditors (FIRS/LIRS etc.) on various audit activities.
- Make timely payments to the tax authorities after approval by the Line Manager.
- Maintain a good relationship with the tax authorities.
- Responsible for general internal audit activities for the Company.
- Manage the Company’s general ledger and account statements; and ensure all transactions are processed in line with acceptable accounting principles.
- Maintain Petty Cash Book.
- Perform periodic ledger and bank reconciliations as required.
- Oversees POS collection and reconciliation.
- Manage the receipts and deposits of cash and bank transactions, including foreign transfers, to ensure the accuracy of the Company’s financial position.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date record of all financial activities.
- Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on needed actions.
- Assist the Head of Finance to formulate the Financial Handbook as well as review and rewrite the current procedures.
- Provide advice and update the Head of Finance on any irregularities or concerns about invoices or any other financial matters.
- Analyzes financial differences, solves, and discusses the complex ones, which demands a higher hand decision to the Head of Finance.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Finance.
Job Requirements
- First Degree in Accounting or Finance or a relevant discipline
- Membership of a recognized professional accounting body – CFA, ACCA or ICAN
- Minimum of 5 years work experience in Accounting / Finance with at least 2 years of experience in a Senior Accountant role. Retail experience is an added advantage.
- An extensive experience in Ledger Accounting and Financial Reporting.
- Good financial and accounting knowledge, including understanding of finance best practices and IFRS/ International Accounting and Financial Reporting standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
- Ability to work with little or no supervision
- Ability to train and manage staff.
