Roy Keane Calls for Bruno Fernandes to Be Stripped of Manchester United Captaincy

Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has launched a scathing attack on Bruno Fernandes, asserting that the Portuguese star should be relieved of his captaincy duties at the club. In the aftermath of Manchester City’s dominating 3-0 victory in the Manchester derby, Keane labeled Fernandes as unsuitable for the role.

Fernandes was handed the captain’s armband by manager Erik ten Hag during the summer, following the removal of Harry Maguire as captain. However, Keane believes it’s time for a change and has urged ten Hag to acknowledge his mistake.

“Today, having watched him again, I would take the captaincy off him 100 per cent,” Keane declared on Super Sunday. “Fernandes is not captain material.”

Keane’s criticism stems from Fernandes’s perceived negative attitude, including frequent displays of frustration, whining, and animated gestures on the field. The former United captain, while acknowledging Fernandes’s footballing talent, insists that these behaviors are unacceptable for a captain.

The call for Fernandes to be stripped of the captaincy has ignited discussions about Manchester United’s woes and where the club should begin addressing its problems. Keane believes that making the right choice for a captain is a crucial starting point for improvement. Despite Fernandes’s brilliance as a footballer, he falls short of Keane’s standards for leadership.

In the wake of a disheartening Manchester derby defeat, this development adds another layer of uncertainty and scrutiny to the challenging season for Manchester United.
