In an extraordinary feat of endurance and determination, Nigerian chess enthusiast Tunde Onakoya has unofficially broken the world record for the longest chess marathon.

Playing amidst the harsh conditions of New York’s streets, Onakoya surpassed the previous record by an impressive two-hour margin, clocking in a remarkable fifty-eight hours of uninterrupted gameplay.

Onakoya’s marathon endeavour garnered attention and support from unexpected quarters when popular musician Davido, accompanied by his wife and entourage, stopped by to boost Onakoya’s spirits during the grueling challenge.

But Onakoya’s mission extended beyond personal achievement. His aim was to raise one million dollars to expand access to chess education for children worldwide. Inspired by a childhood encounter with a chessboard in Ikorodu, Onakoya has been passionately playing the game for nineteen years, founding the non-governmental organization Chess In Slums Africa to provide opportunities for underprivileged children interested in chess.

Prior to his record-breaking marathon, Onakoya had already made waves in the chess world, earning accolades as an exemplary player. His remarkable skills were showcased when he defeated ten contenders simultaneously in Germany, propelling him into the limelight.

If confirmed by the Guinness World Records, Onakoya’s achievement will not only etch his name in history as the first Nigerian to hold the title for the longest chess marathon but also serve as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and philanthropy in making a lasting impact on society.
