Nollywood was recently struck by the sad news of the passing of Lara Odubo, a celebrated television presenter, actress, fashion designer, and singer.

According to report, Lara Odubo passed away on Saturday, July 28th, 2024. Blogger Temilola Sobola confirmed the news, though the cause of death remains undisclosed. Reports suggest that Odubo had been unwell for several days before her passing.

In the wake of this loss, prominent Nollywood figures, including Mercy Aigbe, Bimpe Akintunde, and others, have expressed their grief publicly. Mercy Aigbe, who appeared to have been particularly close to Odubo, took to Instagram to share her sorrow. She wrote:

Hmmm! Life. Still in denial. Adieu Omolara.”

Her post was echoed by her husband Kazim Adeoti, Bimpe Akintunde, Toyin Adewale, and Fausat Balogun, all of whom paid their respects:

– Kazim Adeoti wrote, “May her soul rest in peace.”
– Bimpe Akintunde commented, “Hmmm. Still in shock. RIP, Aunty Lara was such a beautiful soul.”
– Toyin Adewale added, “Hmmm. Oga o. Ha, May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace, IJN.”
– Fausat Balogun simply wrote, “May her soul rest in peace.”

The outpouring of grief from the Nollywood community has not been universally well-received. Some social media users have criticized the celebrities for publicly mourning Odubo, arguing that they had not shown support for her while she was alive.

– Erri Tinkerat Gold commented, “Have never seen folks posted her when she was alive. Even if it’s to wish her a birthday blessing, now that she’s dead, everyone is out on social media, giving her last respect. Loruko Jesu oni fi iku lokiki.”
– Big Mozano20 added, “Why are they posting her now? Have never come across her pictures before, but it’s well. RIP.”

Lara Odubo’s passing adds to a somber list of recent celebrity deaths. In June 2024, Nollywood mourned the loss of veteran actress Stella Ikwuegbu, who passed away on June 16th after a battle with leg cancer, as reported by movie producer Stanley Nwoko. Additionally, actor Dayo Adewunmi, known as Sule Suebebe, died on June 12th. His death was confirmed by Ibadan-based cleric Pastor Ademola Amusan.

As the industry continues to grapple with these losses, the mixed reactions to the tributes highlight ongoing conversations about public and private support for celebrities in their times of need.
