Nigerian dancehall singer Cynthia Morgan, now known as Madrina, has called on her colleagues in the music industry to reject low-paying gigs and demand better compensation.
Drawing from her personal experience of being paid ₦1 million for a show in 2018 and later accused of stalking the organizers.
She recounted how comedian Maleke once persuaded her to accept ₦1 million for a performance in 2018, only for unfounded allegations to follow.
Make artiste no dey collect beggy beggy show again,” she wrote.
This isn’t the first time the outspoken artist has shared her views on the industry. Last year, she expressed gratitude that Samklef’s contribution to her career was limited to buying her food once. According to her, this spared her from being publicly shamed, a fate she has witnessed many artists endure. She also recounted the betrayal she faced during her crisis, revealing that only two people came to her aid while others turned their backs.
Cynthia Morgan has consistently used her platform to address issues in the music industry. In April, she revealed how she went public about Olamide’s financial assistance after being advised not to by someone who deemed the amount insignificant. She contrasted this with her former record label, which loaned her the same amount but later insulted her for it.
The singer has also voiced her disapproval of her colleagues, including Burna Boy and Wizkid, for downplaying Afrobeats despite benefiting from its global success. She pointed out the irony of artists seeking validation from the genre while simultaneously criticizing it.
Additionally, Madrina took aim at Mavins’ management over Rema’s smoking habits, warning Don Jazzy that she would take action if anything happened to the young artist. Her comments underscore her ongoing concerns about the lack of genuine care and support in the music industry.
