Nollywood actor and traditionalist Yul Edochie has shared his perspective on the fear of ageing, describing it as unnecessary and urging people to embrace the process. Taking to Instagram, the actor reflected on the beauty of growing older and its role in deepening one’s understanding of life.
Sometimes I wonder why people are ashamed of getting older. Getting older is a blessing, and it’s beautiful because you understand life better as you get older,” he wrote. Yul, who celebrated his 43rd birthday in January, expressed joy in his current age, adding that he wouldn’t trade his years for anything.
In a message to those fearing ageing due to unfulfilled goals, Yul advised them to relax, reminding them that life isn’t a race. “If you feel you haven’t achieved much at your age, relax. There’s no hurry in life, and nobody has it all. Be content with what you have at any stage in your life,” he added.
Ageing and age-related controversies are common in Nollywood, with several celebrities often defending their stated ages.
Last year, actress Uche Ogbodo clapped back at a troll questioning her age of 38, asserting her confidence in her accomplishments. Similarly, actress Nkechi Blessing faced criticism when she celebrated her 35th birthday, silencing skeptics who accused her of age falsification.
Actress Caroline Danjuma also found herself in the spotlight when she declared she was turning 35. Despite backlash, she stood her ground, dismissing the criticism as baseless while sharing family details to support her claim.
Even outside Nollywood, age controversies have ensnared reality stars like Mercy Eke, the Big Brother Naija winner. After revealing her Voter’s Card, which displayed her real age, critics accused her of hiding her actual age. Mercy’s sister defended her achievements and authenticity, proudly showcasing her accomplishments by age 30.
