IK Osakioduwa Says Name Change Opened Doors to Wealth

IK Osakioduwa says name change opened doors to wealth, as he opened up about the spiritual and personal journey that led him to change his surname and how that single decision transformed his life.

During an interview with actress and host Nancy Isime, the veteran media personality recounted how a simple name registration during a visit to the military hospital in Ikeja sparked deep reflection. At the time, his surname was Obiara, and he began questioning its meaning and spiritual roots.

I was there with my dad, who was in the army, and we were registering my name. I just paused for a moment. I thought to myself, I’m almost a full-on adult and I’m still just ‘so-and-so’s son’? That moment made me realise I needed to start building my own identity.”

Driven by that desire, IK began researching his surname and discovered it was tied to a deity. That revelation didn’t sit well with him. “I’m a Christian,” he said. “So I was like, okay, I want a different name.”

Convincing his father wasn’t easy. It took four years of persistence, silent backing from his mother, and lots of prayer before his father finally agreed. He eventually chose Osakioduwa — a name he says has shaped his destiny.

I know Osa is God, and Ioduwa means God opens the door to wealth. Now that’s a name. That name literally changed my life. My door to wealth opened.”

The popular host, known for anchoring Big Brother Africa and other high-profile gigs, shared how the name change gave him a deeper sense of identity and purpose — a spiritual alignment that went beyond just branding.

This isn’t the first time IK has sparked conversations about personal values and family. Last year, he revealed that he never splits bills with his wife. According to him, she doesn’t even know how much school fees cost — and even if she does, she’s never had to pay them. “As long as I’m alive and well, that’s my responsibility,” he said firmly.

IK also penned a sweet note to his wife, Olu Osakioduwa, during their 14th wedding anniversary. He reflected on how he first mentioned marriage to her and how, even after more than a decade, nothing had changed — his love and excitement for her remain the same.
