“It’s Hard to Find a Decent Man in Nigeria”: Uriel Oputa

Uriel Oputa has opened up about how hard it is to find a decent man in Nigeria, sharing her dating struggles and strong views on societal pressure, age shaming, and unrealistic expectations placed on single women.

Former Big Brother Naija star Uriel Oputa is speaking her truth without holding back. During a sit-down on Outside The Box, the reality TV personality and chef revealed how difficult it is to find a decent man in Nigeria.

It is hard to date a Nigerian man,” she said. “I don’t understand why they’re so complicated.”

Uriel reflected on her own experience, recounting how being desperate for marriage almost led her into a damaging relationship. “Two years ago, I was desperate to get married, and then I met somebody, and that guy showed me pepper — crocodile pepper,” she said.

She didn’t stop there. Uriel touched on a topic many women shy away from: age shaming. She called out the societal habit of making women in their 30s and 40s feel like expired milk, despite being attractive and accomplished.

Age shaming is such a real thing in Nigeria. A lot of women in their 30s and 40s feel like they’re expired milk. But you’ll see women at 35, even 42 — still single, still fine. Yet it’s still hard to find a decent man,” she said.

According to Uriel, part of the problem lies in a cultural mindset that keeps people searching for someone “better,” even when the better doesn’t exist.

We have a culture of ‘there’s always something better.’ There’s nothing better,” she declared.

Looking back at her time in the Big Brother Naija house in 2017, Uriel admitted she never expected to win. Her bold personality, she believes, may not have sat well with viewers.

I went to the house not to win. Nigerians don’t like real people; we like to pretend in this country. I am me, and I will always tell it like it is. People don’t like to hear the truth, but I’ll still tell it.”

Uriel also recently encouraged Nigerians to stay out of other people’s business, pointing out that not everything warrants an opinion. She listed a few personal matters — including relationship choices and financial decisions — that, in her words, are “nobody’s business.”

Offering more advice from personal lessons, Uriel urged women to stop trying to prove themselves to men. She stressed that doing house chores or overextending yourself won’t change a man’s intentions. “Men already know from day one if they see a future with you. Washing his clothes won’t convince him.”

Last year, she sent a firm message to potential suitors, warning them not to judge her silence or humility online. “Because I don’t post luxury bags or show off trips doesn’t mean I’m not a buyer or an understanding babe,” she said.

In one of her more playful moments, Uriel confessed that Burna Boy is her celebrity crush. She jokingly shared that she’s attracted to his rough look and physique, even imagining how things would go down if she had her way. “I want Burna to choke me — my eyes may pop out, but I’m ready,” she teased.
