Manchester United’s winger, Antony, has opted to delay his return to training with the club following the international break due to ongoing allegations of assault against him. While Antony remains on full pay, the club has granted him a leave of absence, emphasizing the importance of addressing the allegations seriously.
The allegations stem from multiple sources. Former girlfriend Gabriela Cavalin initially made accusations against Antony, leading to his omission from the Brazilian national team. Subsequently, Rayssa de Freitas claimed to have required hospital treatment following an alleged assault involving Antony and another woman in May 2022.
Manchester United issued a statement expressing their stance on the matter: “As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognize the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”
Antony himself issued a statement in collaboration with the club, stating, “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me.” He reaffirmed his innocence and pledged full cooperation with the authorities to ascertain the truth.
In a recent interview on Brazilian TV, Antony vehemently denied the allegations and stated his commitment to proving his innocence. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the alleged incidents have been reported to the Sao Paulo Civil Police. Another woman, Ingrid Lana, has also made accusations against Antony in a television interview, further complicating the situation.
Asked about Lana’s accusation, Antony said in the interview on Friday: “Negative. I’m 100 per cent certain that I never touched any woman. 100 per cent. I am certain.
“I will produce the proof and people will understand. They will see the truth.”
The ongoing investigation will determine the outcome of these serious allegations, while Antony’s absence from training reflects the sensitivity of the matter for both the player and the club.
