Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, reflecting on Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat in the Manchester derby, has expressed deep concerns about the club’s current state, claiming that they have lost confidence and spirit. Wenger, who departed as Arsenal manager in 2018, believes that the gulf between Manchester United and their rivals is widening and sees little room for improvement under Erik ten Hag’s management.

Wenger stated, “In the end, you felt sorry for Man United because there’s no hope there in the team. I don’t see where they can improve. This team has lost confidence, quality and even spirit.”

He attributed some of their issues to a cautious style of play, saying, “I would say it started [with playing the ball back to the goalkeeper]. Then you make the whole team uncertain and lack confidence because when you feel the fear is behind, they do not want the ball.”

The ex-Arsenal boss also emphasized the dominance of Manchester City in the derby, highlighting the challenge United faces in closing the gap.

Manchester United now face the task of regaining their form as they prepare to host Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, hoping to recover from their recent setbacks under Erik ten Hag’s leadership.
