Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Ayra Starr has responded with grace and humor to online trolls mocking her for not securing a Grammy nomination.

The 67th Grammy Awards nominations were released on Friday, with Afrobeat stars Rema and Tems earning spots in the Best Global Album category. The prestigious ceremony is set for February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Ayra Starr had submitted her album, The Year I Turned 21, for consideration in the Global Music Album category but was unfortunately not selected. Fellow Nigerian artist and YBNL signee, Asake, also faced disappointment after his submission, Lungu Boy, was not nominated.

Despite the criticism, Ayra Starr took to Twitter, sharing a series of memes and playfully telling her critics to “relax.” Acknowledging the trolling, she tweeted about how she was being heavily dragged on the platform but kept a light-hearted attitude.

Fans and followers rallied to her defense, praising her talent and resilience:

  • One Oluwa Buzzo commented, “You all will think she is engulfing cruise, but if she pukes out what’s in her guts you’d be surprised it contains pains.”
  • Onyinye Chukwu admired her composure, saying, “I like the way she’s not taking it too seriously. She’s just catching a cruise.”
  • A fan named Baddie Kimmy K wrote, “Ayra is very talented and super-successful. A Grammy would never define her or her career! She’s a star and that’s all that matters.”

Other supporters emphasized her hard work and achievements, with some praising her witty replies and expressing admiration for her journey.

The mockery comes months after Ayra humorously declared that she had been “carrying Afrobeat on her back,” lamenting that her waist was bent from the weight of it all. Despite the Grammy snub, Ayra has had an impressive year, including a major milestone with a BET Award nomination for Best New Artist.

Earlier this year, she shared her journey to stardom in an interview with Spotify, revealing that even at ten years old, she knew she would be famous, drawing inspiration from the fictional character Hannah Montana. Ayra Starr’s career continues to shine, and her fans remain loyal, believing that her star power is undeniable.
