Mick Slattery, the co-founder and original guitarist of the rock band Hawkwind, has died at 77. The band confirmed his passing on March 17, following a short illness.
Mick Slattery’s musical contributions to the band include recording several tracks at Abbey Road Studios, most notably their hit song, “Silver Machine.”
Dave Brock, a fellow bandmate and friend, paid tribute to Slattery. He also shared some of their memories from the earlier days.
Me and Mick played together in a band called Famous Cure in 1967, touring Holland before going on to form Hawkwind in 1969,” Brock stated in a message. “I have lots of fond memories from our younger days, playing together in Holland and hanging out in Richmond at the L’Auberge Cafe and Eel Pie Island.”
Hawkwind was originally formed in 1969 with Slattery and Brock collaborating with John Harrison (bass), Terry Ollis (drums), Nik Turner (sax/flute) and Michael “Dik Mik” Davies (keyboards). The group initially performed under the name Group X before finally settling on Hawkwind. Slattery’s death marks a significant loss to the band’s legacy and the rock music community at large.
