The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has terminated the employment of its two officers and sanctioned 35 others for misbehaviour.

Mr Abubakar Umar, the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), said this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Umar stated that the firing was part of an endeavour to establish personnel discipline and to embed worldwide best practices.

He stated that the officers were sanctioned for a variety of offences, including contraband trafficking, unauthorised absence from duty, theft, dereliction of duty, criminal conspiracy, and aiding and abetting.

He further stated that the acts were a threat to the security of detention institutions and might imperil public safety and national security.

He cited the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, as saying that the agency will continue to reward dedication and great performance.

He did, however, state that the agency will not hesitate to discipline lawbreaking employees.

The Controller General insisted that the agency would keep making sure that corrupt individuals were removed from the system.

He gave the assurance that the service will continue to carry out its legal obligations with honesty, decency, and on the basis of moral principles consistent with global best practises.
