Nigerian singer Cynthia Morgan, now known as Madrina, has shared her perspective on the historical and cultural ties between the Benin and Yoruba peoples.
In an Instagram story, Madrina weighed in on the long-standing discussions about power and superiority between the two ethnic groups.
Cynthia Morgan highlighted historical connections between the Benin and Yoruba peoples through marriage, referencing the lineage of Oromiyan, the first Oba of Benin. She explained:
Oromiyan, also known as Omonoyan, is considered the first Oba of Benin and the father of Eweka I.
Oduduwa, a significant figure in Yoruba history, was described as an exiled prince from Benin who gained favor among the Yoruba people.
Through Oromiyan, the two cultures became interlinked, making them “cousins” historically.
Morgan finds the debate over superiority between the two ethnic groups amusing, emphasizing their shared history:
“The power for superiority between Benin and the Yoruba people will always be funny to me… Prior to this, the Benins and Yorubas existed in their own demography, respectively. But through Oromiyan, we became cousins.”
Cynthia Morgan also shared her political observations, showing support for the current president. She remarked that, while not the worst president Nigeria has seen, he still has time to address critical issues such as subsidy removal.
The singer has previously clashed with Afrobeats star Davido over his involvement in Edo State politics. She criticized him for claiming Edo heritage through his mother but failing to engage with the struggles of the Edo people.
Morgan has been vocal about social issues, describing Facebook as a platform for “witches and wizards prophesying rubbish.” She also condemned cultism and cult killings, advocating for peaceful alternatives.
