Big Brother Naija winner, Ijeoma Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, is mourning the loss of her sister, Ruth Otabor, who tragically passed away after being struck by a Dangote truck.
The sad news was first shared by the SUG president of Auchi Polytechnic on his Instagram story, where he posted her photo with RIP and crying emojis. Hours later, Phyna confirmed the news herself, revealing that her sister died on August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 pm. She appealed to the public to allow her family some privacy to grieve, promising that funeral details would be made known at a later date.
Earlier in the week, Phyna had publicly called out Aliko Dangote and his company, accusing them of shielding the truck driver by removing the vehicle’s plate number. She stressed that while the businessman may have wealth, he is not above accountability.
In response, Dangote Group issued a statement confirming their support since the accident occurred. The company explained that it had covered all financial and medical expenses, with arrangements even made to fly Ruth to India for advanced treatment before her passing.
The management also extended condolences to Phyna and her family, praying for the soul of the deceased and promising continued support, including compensation for the family and other victims involved in the crash.
Phyna, however, had earlier expressed frustration at the company’s press statements, pointing out the irony in wishing her sister a quick recovery after she had already suffered a leg amputation. She also raised concerns about the bike rider involved in the accident, whose condition remains critical.
