David De Gae as Manchester United Goalie

In a potentially career-defining moment, David de Gea, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, may retire at the age of 33 if he doesn’t secure a spot as the No.1 goalkeeper at a major club, according to The Guardian.

De Gea’s illustrious 12-year stint at Old Trafford ended on a somber note in June when United withdrew a contract offer. Since then, the 32-year-old has been training solo, but he’s yet to find a new club, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Reports suggest that LaLiga teams Real Betis and Valencia are eyeing De Gea on a free transfer, but he’s adamant about joining as the first-choice keeper. Whether these teams can compete for major honors, a desire expressed by De Gea, remains debatable, but they undoubtedly qualify as major clubs with substantial fan bases in Spain.

With his 33rd birthday approaching in November, De Gea is free to sign for a new club at any time. However, he might view the January transfer window as his last chance to revive his career before contemplating retirement.

Despite facing challenges towards the end of his Manchester United tenure, De Gea leaves as a club legend, boasting a Premier League title and five PFA Team of the Year selections as a testament to his immense talent and respect in the football world.

However, it’s reported that he didn’t feel the same level of respect from the club, as they offered him a reduced contract following the arrival of Andre Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2 million. Contract discussions broke down in July after the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, preventing the former Spain international from bidding farewell to Old Trafford’s faithful supporters.
