In a new song titled “Mr Yakubu”, Nigerian rappers Falz and Vector have taken direct shots at the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu. The lyrics of the song insinuate that the electoral commission’s chairman exhibited fraudulent behaviours during the just concluded general election.

In the music video, the rappers also portrayed some of the excuses given by INEC on why the presidential results were not uploaded in real-time on its portal during the February 25th election. The video also portrays some of the irregularities on the part of security operatives during the election.

Additionally, the artists recall how youths were shot during the #EndSARS protest of 2020. They highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

The song has sparked reactions on social media. Many Nigerians applauded the rappers for speaking out against corruption and injustice in the country. Some have also criticized the government and the electoral commission. Especially for their failure to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure a free and fair election.

Falz and Vector are known for their socially conscious music. They have used their platform to address social and political issues affecting Nigeria. With “Mr Yakubu“, they have once again brought attention to the need for transparency in the country’s electoral process. It is especially important to have accountability in a democratic system.

The music industry has been instrumental in promoting activism and social change in Nigeria, and this latest release from Falz and Vector is another example of the power of music in raising awareness about issues affecting society. As Nigerians continue to demand transparency and accountability in the country’s governance, the music industry is sure to play a significant role in amplifying these voices.
