Nigerian singer and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

On Tuesday, Tinubu announced the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the House of Assembly for six months, citing an evaluation of the state’s political crisis. Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) was appointed as the state’s administrator.

Reacting on Twitter, Falz condemned the move, emphasizing that no law permits a president to suspend a governor, who can only be removed through impeachment. He questioned whether Rivers State was experiencing a war, a breakdown of public order, or a threat to Nigeria’s existence.

Rivers State, there is ABSOLUTELY NO LAW that allows a president to SUSPEND a governor. A governor is elected into office and may only be removed by impeachment,” Falz wrote. “Is Rivers State at war? Is there an actual breakdown of public order? Is there a threat to the existence of the federation?”
