Self-proclaimed financial adviser GehGeh has stirred controversy with claims that the Grammy Awards exploit Nigerian artists like Davido and Wizkid to boost African viewership, rather than honoring their achievements. His statements follow Davido’s recent loss at the 67th Grammy Awards.
In a viral Instagram video, GehGeh asserted that Grammy organizers strategically nominate prominent Nigerian artists to attract African audiences to the event. However, he argued that these nominations rarely translate into awards for the artists.
GehGeh said,
Grammy is using Davido to market the award to Nigerians and Africans. They know Davido and Wizkid are a big force in the music industry, and their nominations make Nigerians anticipate the event. Why do you think Drake stopped submitting his songs? Why would they put Chris Brown in the Afrobeat category? To market the award to Africans.”
He further claimed that the Grammy Awards often favor artists who show little interest in the accolades while sidelining those who genuinely seek recognition. GehGeh suggested that this trend extends beyond Nigerian acts to include international artists like Nicki Minaj, who, despite her influence, has not won a Grammy.
If you check the history of the Grammy, na people wey no really care about the award dey win. Once they know you are really obsessed with it, you go cry tire, you no go see am,” he added.
Drawing parallels, GehGeh referenced Drake’s decision to stop submitting his work to the Grammys, citing dissatisfaction with the selection process. He also questioned the inclusion of Chris Brown in the Afrobeat category, labeling it a marketing ploy aimed at African audiences.
GehGeh’s comments have sparked discussions among fans and critics alike. While some agree with his stance, others believe the Grammy Awards remain a prestigious platform that acknowledges global talent.
