The Nigeria Bricklayer Association (NBA) has identified fraud and greed as the main reasons for the ongoing building collapse.

In recent years, several states, especially Lagos, have had accidents where buildings under construction/already occupied collapsed.

On Wednesday, the bricklayers’ association announced this position at its annual national conference in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state, where Abdulraheem Ayenigba, chairman of Kwara state, said masons are craftsmen who incorporate other experts’ drawings into physical structures.

Mr Ayenigba said that buildings built by purebreds years ago were not extensively destroyed, unlike the reality today.

Lagos NBA chairman Oebamiji Dauda said many construction consultants are not grounded in the profession but only after their pay.

“Some expatriates patronised by the government and wealthy individuals do not have knowledge about our soil, structures or land texture.

“There are different building foundations for different land or soil types. Versatile bricklayers or building engineers need to know these,” NAN quoted him as saying.

Ogun NBA Chairman, Adeniyi Daniel emphasised the need for practical knowledge among experts and charged bricklayers not to be timid while dealing with owners of structures.
