Spanish actress Hiba Abouk, who is the wife of footballer Achraf Hakimi, has been the subject of false rumors claiming she demanded half of his assets in their divorce, but everything was in his mother’s name. A 2018 MIT study suggests that fake news spreads more quickly than factual information, and these claims illustrate its findings.
Investigative journalist Rym Bousmid looked into the rumor and concluded that it had no basis in truth. The rumor originated from a tweet by the Ivorian journal First Mag, a platform known for disseminating fake news more frequently than credible journalism.
French journalist and sports reporter Gilles Verdez also spoke against the rumors, calling them “fake news.” He stressed that it would not be possible for Hakimi to transfer the property to his mother’s name.Despite refutations of the story by Hakimi’s mother, the rumor continued to spread and fuel discussions.
Legal Perspective
From a legal perspective, Concealing assets from a spouse is a fraud from a legal perspective. According to The African Report, most European countries, including Spain, Germany, Italy, and France, have two types of matrimonial regimes: marriage in a community of property and separation of property. In either case, the couple’s wealth will be shared in case of divorce, or if not, hiding assets from a spouse is considered fraud.
Omar El Adlouni, a professor at the French university La Sorbonne, stated that transferring wealth to avoid splitting assets in case of a divorce is a criminal act punishable by law.
Additionally, Abouk has publicly supported Hakimi’s alleged rape victims, while Hakimi himself is currently under investigation in a rape case in Nanterre and has been under judicial supervision since March 2023.
He denies the charges, and his lawyer has denounced the case as an attempt at extortion.
Abouk and Hakimi were in a relationship for five years, including three years of marriage, and have two children together. Speaking after the announcement of Hakimi’s sexual assault case, Abouk said she was “on the side of the victims” and “trust the good work of justice.”
