Nollywood star Kate Henshaw has expressed strong opposition to Nigeria’s current electricity banding system, following news of a potential tariff hike for Band A users.
In a tweet that resonated with many Nigerians, Henshaw called the banding system “pure theft” and argued that no other country in the world operates its electricity distribution in this way.
Henshaw urged Nigerian authorities to implement a fairer electricity distribution model, emphasizing that every citizen deserves equal access to electricity. She proposed that users should be billed solely based on their actual electricity consumption, rather than arbitrary banding categories.
Her statement sparked a wave of reactions, with many social media users echoing her sentiments and sharing their frustrations over the electricity hike. One user, Chidie, commented,
Funny thing is I don’t think you can even unsubscribe from the Band A plan unless you move to a remote area.” Another user, Chef Ego, lamented the reduced value of electricity units, stating, “My 20k used to give me over 300 units, but now I only got 88 units. This is daylight robbery!”
Many others voiced similar concerns, with one user, big.damzzzzz, bluntly stating,
At this point, we are working to take care of the government.” Another user, Cleopatra Cedar, shared her strategy for dealing with the price hike, saying, “I kuku removed
myself from Band A, I’m now in Band C. As long as there’s still light, even if it’s not 24 hours, it’s fine.”
The ongoing frustrations with Nigeria’s electricity system extend beyond just the banding and price hikes. Some users highlighted a deeper issue of political accountability. User cakes_by_israel remarked,
Many of the people complaining will still vote for the same leaders if given the opportunity right now. This is the sad reality.”
Another, beccaszn, criticized the government’s continuous attempts to make life difficult for citizens, exclaiming,
What is Band A and Band Z? Just any way possible to keep making life hard for us!”
Kate Henshaw’s call for fairer electricity distribution seems to have struck a chord with the public, as more Nigerians are increasingly voicing their dissatisfaction with the current system.
