Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, said it had become necessary to refocus the nation’s education strategy to focus on the delivery of marketable graduates.

The governor, speaking at the start of the 67th National Council on Education meeting in Lagos, urged education stakeholders to “work at ensuring self-reliant youths are produced through the state and national educational system.”

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, said:

“It has become expedient to reposition the education policy by making and implementing a strategy to deliver graduate students who will blend with the labour market demands.

“The theme of the NCE meeting, ‘Addressing the challenges of policy implementation: A panacea for the achievement of Education 2030 Agenda,’ is an avenue to co-create and collaborate towards enhancing quality of teaching and learning that would provide more refined educational models and proffer lasting solutions to the challenges of policy formulation in the education sector.”

Earlier, Mr Andrew Adejo, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, urged stakeholders in the education sector to create a system that provides a solid basis for lifelong learning and to utilise education as a vehicle for national development.

Adejo, who was represented by Mrs. Anigbogu Uju, Director of Educational Planning and Research and Development in the Ministry, stated:

“When policies that guide a nation are not implemented at the appropriate time, the consequences are backwardness, underdevelopment, unemployment for graduates, poverty, insecurity, etc.

“However, to tackle the challenges of policy implementation, all hands must be on deck.”
