Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Njoku has expressed concern over the rising trend of young women in their early 20s using Botox.
Taking to Instagram, the actress questioned the need for such procedures among women who are naturally youthful, labeling it a troubling trend.
Mary highlighted that Botox is traditionally used by women in their 40s and 50s to reduce wrinkles. She wondered aloud, “At 20s, what wrinkles could you possibly be trying to hide?”
Mary urged young women to cherish their natural beauty and youthful glow, noting how many older women wish they could relive their 20s. She encouraged parents to instill a sense of self-esteem in their daughters, emphasizing the importance of embracing one’s natural self.
Let’s teach our daughters to embrace and celebrate their natural selves. Self-esteem is everything,” she added.
This isn’t the first time Mary has shared her perspective on societal trends. In September, she urged religious women to normalize including IVF in their testimonies, calling it a miracle just like natural conception or a C-section. She also criticized those who downplay medical interventions in favor of “miracle” narratives, suggesting that it can discourage others from seeking necessary medical help.
The actress has consistently used her platform to challenge societal norms. Last year, she questioned celebrities about life after fame, asking if they have a sustainable life to fall back on once the limelight fades. She has also criticized the culture of airing grievances on social media instead of addressing issues directly, calling for more accountability and authentic interactions.
