Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Mary Remmy Njoku has delivered a powerful message to Nigerian women, urging them to be cautious of victim-blaming in society.
In a candid post on her Instagram page, the Harvard undergraduate expressed concern over the prevalent culture of blaming and shaming female victims in Nigeria.
Mary emphasized the dire consequences faced by women who become victims in Nigeria, highlighting how even in death, they are often held responsible for their plight. She called for a collective effort to foster a more supportive and compassionate society.
Her message sparked a dialogue in the comments section, where she engaged with a critic who questioned the assumption of transactional sex in cases of missing Nigerian women. Mary challenged the stereotype and urged for a more empathetic and humane approach to understanding women’s experiences.
The conversation was prompted by the case of Celine and her Ghanaian friend, Afiba, who went missing after travelling to Abia State to meet someone they met on Facebook. The tragic outcome of their journey underscored the need for greater awareness and empathy towards women’s safety.
Mary’s stance against victim blaming is not new, as she has previously spoken out against societal attitudes that unfairly target and criticize women in vulnerable situations. She called attention to the hypocrisy of condemning victims while simultaneously engaging in online dating and romantic relationships.
