Media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown has passionately called for accountability from former Nigerian Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, following his recent controversial book launch.

The launch sparked widespread reactions as Babangida openly acknowledged his role in significant national events, particularly the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest election. The annulment had far-reaching consequences, including the tragic death of the presumed winner, MKO Abiola.

Taking to her platform, Morayo shared a deeply emotional account of the personal and national trauma inflicted by Babangida’s regime. She expressed her frustration at the seeming levity with which the matter is now treated and demanded that the former leader be held accountable for his actions.

In her statement, Morayo recounted the pain her family endured, detailing her father’s relentless opposition to Babangida’s regime, which ultimately led to imprisonment, self-exile, and a debilitating stroke.

“My father warned Nigerians about this man. He did everything in his power to make him pay for his sins, but nothing happened. Men of valor fought with their voices, pen, and influence, yet Babangida bulldozed all in his path.”

She also highlighted her childhood connection to the Abiola family, recounting how the annulment and subsequent events brought unimaginable grief to both families.

“Growing up with MKO Abiola, his wife Kudirat, and their children, I witnessed how our families were ripped apart. The home once filled with laughter and joy became a house of sorrow and pain. My father suffered a stroke upon hearing the news of Kudirat’s death. He never recovered.”

Morayo strongly criticized the celebratory tone of Babangida’s book launch, particularly the laughter shared by prominent attendees, which she found disrespectful to the memories of those who suffered during his tenure.

“Today, he says he takes responsibility, and we should just accept and move on? I saw how you all laughed at the book launch. I’m sorry, nothing there seemed comical to me.”

She further urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reflect on the past struggles and ensure justice is served.
