The music industry mourns the loss of a true visionary as Clarence Avant, renowned as the “Black Godfather,” peacefully passed away at the age of 92. His departure comes 19 months after a tragic incident in which his wife was murdered in their Los Angeles residence.

Clarence Avant’s children, Nicole and Alexander, alongside his son-in-law, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, shared the somber news in an official statement on Monday, August 14. He breathed his last at his Los Angeles home on Sunday, August 13, leaving behind an indelible legacy that has touched countless lives.

Described as a trailblazer and a mentor, Clarence Avant’s impact on the music landscape is immeasurable. His pioneering journey began in the 1950s when he managed a lounge in New Jersey. Guided by the mentorship of Joseph G. “Joe” Glaser, the famed music manager of Louis Armstrong, Avant embarked on a remarkable career that would reshape the industry.

Avant’s influence was felt across generations, as he managed and nurtured the careers of legendary performers such as Sixto Rodriguez, Bill Withers, and the dynamic duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Not content with merely managing talent, he founded two record labels, Venture Records in 1967 and Sussex Records in 1969. His entrepreneurial spirit also led to the establishment of the first African-American-owned FM radio station, a testament to his dedication to advancing diversity in the field.

His legacy extended beyond record labels and radio waves. Avant’s strategic acumen was evident as he facilitated the sale of Stax Records and assumed the role of chairman of the board at Motown Records. In recognition of his monumental contributions, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, a fitting tribute to his enduring impact.

Clarence Avant’s achievements were not confined to accolades; his star graces the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he was honoured with the prestigious Industry Icon Award at the 2019 Grammys. The same year also marked the release of his Netflix documentary, “The Black Godfather,” an intimate portrayal of his life that offered a glimpse into the man behind the legend.

As the music world reflects on the loss of Clarence Avant, his enduring legacy will continue to inspire and shape the industry for generations to come. Though his physical presence may have departed, the echoes of his contributions will forever resonate in the hearts and minds of music enthusiasts worldwide.
