Controversial Nigerian singer Naira Marley, known for his unfiltered remarks, has sparked online conversations with a Ramadan message directed at his Muslim followers.
Naira Marley took to social media to criticize Muslims who fast during Ramadan but engage in football betting, humorously suggesting they abandon fasting altogether. His post read:
You are fasting and still betting on football? Go and eat, please.”
The remark generated mixed reactions online, with many debating whether betting is inherently sinful during Ramadan.Several users on social media shared their views on the statement:
- Follow_me_yarn: “How is betting a sin?”
- Sabiigirlfashion: “I’ve never agreed with him until today.”
- Melanin_ruth_: “When did this one turn Imam?”
- Shoes_by_demokraft: “Imam sef wan preach.”
While some agreed with Naira Marley’s stance, others found humour in his boldness, dubbing him an “unexpected Imam.”This latest controversy follows Naira Marley’s legal exoneration over the death of his former signee, Mohbad. A Lagos Magistrate court recently cleared him, his aide Sam Larry, and Prime Boy, stating they had no case to answer regarding Mohbad’s tragic demise.
Reacting to the ruling, Naira Marley shared Quranic verses and an emotional reflection. He expressed relief and noted that he had been unjustly burdened with blame, adding:
I’ve carried weight, pain, and shame that was never mine to bear. My label wasn’t perfect, but we made peace with Mohbad before his passing. Yet, when he died, the whole world pointed fingers at me.”
Mohbad, a 27-year-old former signee of Naira Marley’s Marlian Music, passed away under unclear circumstances on September 12, 2023. Following his death, a viral video of Sam Larry assaulting Mohbad led to widespread public outrage and the eventual cancellation of Naira Marley and his label.
Despite their eventual release from custody in November 2023, public trust in Naira Marley and his label remains shaky, as efforts to regain credibility through charitable acts continue.
