Nigerian Woman, Jamila Zozami, Sparks Debate on Social Media Etiquette for Married Women

Nigerian woman Jamila Zozami has ignited a heated debate on social media by asserting her views on what constitutes a true African woman’s behaviour, particularly in relation to social media usage post-marriage.

According to her Facebook post, Jamila believes that a married woman should delete all her social media accounts and content as soon as she ties the knot, citing it as a test of her African womanhood.

Her statement has sparked widespread reactions, especially among female netizens, who have flooded her comment section to share their diverse opinions on the matter.

This controversy echoes sentiments expressed earlier in January 2024 by reality TV star Angel Smith, who criticized the societal pressure on married women to conform to certain behavioural norms. Angel condemned the expectation for married women to demand formal titles like “Sir” for their husbands, urging them to focus on more substantial issues amidst economic challenges.

Similarly, musician Seun Kuti addressed societal attitudes towards victims of sexual abuse, using the case of Busola Dakolo, wife of singer Timi Dakolo, as an example.
