Nine Killed by Suspected Herdsmen in Benue

Suspected Herdsmen are believed to have attacked communities in the Local Government Areas of Apa and Gwer West in Benue state, killing nine people. Six people were reported dead in the Ucheen community, Gwer West, and three are believed to have died in Apa.

Mr Eche Akpoko, the National Chairman of Apa Development Association said three villages were attacked by suspected herdsmen. They allegedly entered the villages of Akpanta, Ochumeko and Ijaha villages on Friday and Saturday.

According to him-

“Akpanta and Ogwuji villages were burnt down and the attackers killed three people at Ijaha village.”

The traditional ruler of Makurdi, Vincent Aule the Ter Makurdi, spoke on the attacks on the Ucheen community. In his words-

“Yes, it happened at Ucheen village, after Adaka, a border community in Makurdi. They came around 2:30 am on Monday and killed about six people.

“They killed one woman, her husband and their child. They were sleeping when they came and killed three of them.

“Then they also killed three other persons. There is one other person who also died. A man who was related to this husband and wife. He came that morning and saw them lying on the ground, he fell down and died. They took him to the hospital but he later died.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, only confirmed the attack in the Ucheen community, saying five people were killed.
