Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has opted to deactivate his Twitter account after facing severe backlash over a degrading tweet he made about Unilag girls.
The emerging movie star, who has been gaining recognition in the industry, recently came under fire for a tweet dating back to 2011, where he made derogatory remarks about female students of the University of Lagos. In the now-deleted tweet, Timini alleged that Unilag girls were inclined to engage in intimate relations with men for material gains and a lavish lifestyle, even going as far as suggesting they readily remove their underwear at the mention of a boat cruise.
Although Timini has since removed the tweet from his account and deactivated his Twitter profile, netizens continue to express mixed reactions. While some have come to his defense, citing the tweet’s age and the actor’s youthful indiscretion, others condemn his words as disrespectful to women.
This incident brings to mind a similar controversy involving Big Brother Naija All Stars housemate Seyi Awolowo, who faced public outrage for derogatory remarks made during a conversation on the show. Seyi later apologized, but skepticism arose regarding the authenticity of his remorse, with many questioning the sincerity of his apology amid public perception of him as a villain.
