The Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) is a vital position in the oil and gas industry. The main responsibility of the OIM is to manage and oversee the safe and efficient operation of offshore oil and gas installations, which include drilling platforms, production platforms, and other offshore facilities.
Responsibilities
- Ensure drilling operations are carried out in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.
- Carry out objectives established by onshore rig management and/or the OIM.
- Plan, schedule, and concurrently solve problems, conduct inspections and operational meetings. Furthermore, interact with other rig department heads, and communicate directions to the Drilling Department supervisors.
- Complete successful offshore oil and/or gas wells to the satisfaction of the Client and Company management and within compliance with applicable regulations.
- Ensure the pre-job meeting is carried out for non-routine drilling operations.
- Ensure the Toolpusher is informed on an ongoing basis as to the good program objectives and communicate any changes in plans.
- Monitor the maintenance, repair, and installation of drilling equipment including repair, lubrication, maintenance records, and inventory levels.
- Ensure the mud mixing systems and solid control equipment are monitored continually and properly maintained
- Partake in the daily operations meeting with the other rig department heads.
- Monitor the application of the Company preventative maintenance system program within the drilling department.
- Supervise equipment preparation for impending drilling operations.
- Plan the job activities of the drilling department and associated activities.
- Ensure that well control requirements are in place according to operational requirements – Supervise well-killing operations in an emergency situation.
- Coordinate the activities of third-party personnel responsible for various aspects of the well program.
- Review the daily drilling operations report for accuracy and approve accordingly.
- Review and approve purchasing documents for equipment or parts necessary to keep the drilling operation free of downtime. Assist in ensuring sufficient stock of parts and materials is maintained.
Further Offshore Installation Manager Role:
- Plan, organize, and supervise rig move operations when assigned to a Jack-up rig.
- Maintain proper communication with the Drilling Crew regarding the progress of drilling and associated operations.
- Manage and direct the daily activities of the drilling department in accordance with client goals and within Company guidelines/policy.
- Operate the drilling unit in accordance with safe and acceptable practices with company guidelines/policy.
- Knowledgeable and able to perform procedures for circulating kick-out in accordance with one of three basic methods: wait and weight, Driller’s method, and concurrent.
- Operate in such a manner, which results in achieving the Operating Plan and objectives including but not limited to safety, downtime, Client drilling curve, rig budget (cost control), and manpower turnover rig appearance/housekeeping.
- Eliminate waste, and establish a cost-conscious planning effort within the area of responsibility.
- Ensure that adequate levels of inventory for the drilling system equipment are maintained, accurately inventoried and preserved.
- Also, ensure subordinates understand and apply guidelines of the Company QHSE manual and rig-specific procedures.
- Inform the Master (or shore-based Rig Manager, if no Master) of any incidents, potential hazards, or abnormal situations.
- Lead weekly meetings and other Company safety management systems.
- Ensure a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is always maintained onboard the rig.
- Basically, be knowledgeable of all Company safety policies and procedures that pertain to your area of responsibility, including fire fighting, emergency and lifesaving equipment, and emergency response. Actively lead and participate in safety discussions, safety drills and inspections.
Direct drill crew response in the event of well control procedures.
- Liaise and coordinate drilling activities with the onboard Company Man (Client Representative)
- Ensure that the SMART process is fully implemented on board and also see to championing the process
- Ensure (when acting as the OIM/MIC) full and effective implementation of the Management System
- Act as a Responsible Person in the Permit to Work System when working on a Jack-up rig.
- Inspect the drilling unit and ensure compliance with all regulatory body requirements.
- Create an emergency team in executing emergency assignments in accordance with the station bill.
- Direct drill crew rig abandonment procedures.
- Direct drill crew response in the event of fire; knows the location of and trains drill crew in the use of alarm systems.
- Furthermore, render assistance within personal qualifications and/or coordinates medical services in case of personal injury.
Qualifications
- Minimum 20 years in the onshore or offshore drilling operation.
