On Wednesday morning, July 31st, iconic singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu tragically collapsed after performing at Stella Okolie’s 80th birthday party in Lagos.
She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to sources close to the family, Onyeka attended a friend’s birthday party and performed on stage. After her performance, she returned to her seat and suddenly slumped. Emergency services were called immediately, and she was taken to the hospital on Victoria Island, where she was later pronounced dead.
A week after her untimely death, Onyeka Onwenu’s family has broken their silence regarding her burial arrangements. During a visit from the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) at her Ikoyi, Lagos residence, the family announced plans to lay her to rest as soon as possible. Although a specific date has not been mentioned, her sons indicated that they intend to bury their mother before the end of the month, with detailed arrangements to be announced in the coming days.
Following her passing, numerous celebrities have paid tribute to the beloved icon. Singer Omawumi shared a candlelight photo with a heartbroken emoji, while actress Regina Askia posted a picture of Onyeka on Instagram, expressing her sorrow.
Fuji singer Malaika prayed for Onyeka’s soul to rest in peace, and actress Genevieve Nnaji penned a heartfelt tribute, revealing her profound grief and disbelief over the loss. FFK’s ex-wife, Precious Chikwendu, described Onyeka as an “elegant stallion,” thanking her for standing by her during crucial moments in her life.
