Jah Shaka, the reggae legend and pioneering member of the roots reggae Jamaican sound system in London, has passed away. The icon, also known as Zulu Warrior, had recently announced a new tour date for August 19 before his untimely passing. The news was shared by Horsepower Productions’ Benny Ill on Twitter, and the cause of his death is currently unknown. Jah Shaka was born in Clarendon, Jamaica, and moved to London in 1956, where he experienced the harsh racism associated with the Windrush generation.

Jah Shaka kickstarted his successful career as an operator on the Freddie Cloudburst Sound System. But by the 1970s, the legendary musician was operating his own sound system. He named it The Jah Shaka Sound System and was producing many iconic reggae tracks. He was also running his own record label – Jah Shaka Music. In 1980, he starred as himself in the movie Babylon, which portrayed the racial tensions he battled when he moved to the UK.

He was a hero to many in the dub and reggae scene, and his influence was felt across generations. Dubstep producer The Bug took to social media to pay tribute, saying-

“So sad to read Jah Shaka has departed this planet… Rest in peace. A heroic figure who kept Dub alive, when few cared… I spent many all nighters being transfixed by his passion and selections.”

His legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations of music lovers around the world. He will always be remembered for his contribution to the reggae sound. As well as his tireless efforts to break down racial barriers.
