In a dramatic LaLiga clash, former Real Madrid stalwart Sergio Ramos found himself on the wrong side of history as he received his 29th career red card in Sevilla’s 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad. The 37-year-old defender was shown the red card for a late sliding tackle on Brais Méndez, adding to the woes of Sevilla, who had another player, Jesus Navas, sent off in the same match.
Ramos’s dismissal, the 21st in LaLiga, makes him the player with the most red cards in the competition’s history. Known for his feisty style, Ramos’s 29 red cards across all competitions place him third in the 21st century, behind Rafael Marquez and Felipe Melo.
Despite Ramos’s unfortunate record, Real Sociedad emerged victorious with an early own goal from Marko Dmitrovic and a sensational strike from Umar Sadiq. The Nigerian striker’s goal, coming in the 22nd minute, proved decisive as Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nessyri managed to pull one back in the second half.
Ramos’s absence, along with Navas, poses a selection challenge for Sevilla manager Diego Alonso in their upcoming match against Villarreal. Currently positioned 15th in LaLiga, Sevilla faces a four-point gap from the relegation places, having not secured a league victory since September.
