In a social media outburst, renowned musician Seun Kuti took to Instagram to mock Ayo Makun for explaining his decision to accept the national honour bestowed upon him. Seun Kuti emphasized that the National Award is based on a nomination by a presidential committee and the subsequent approval of the president. He sarcastically urged the comedian to embrace his “Buhari” award without further ado.
Let me reiterate, it’s not a public opinion poll that determines the recipients of national awards; it’s a presidential committee, and then the president approves the nomination of certain individuals. While it is indeed a national honor, it remains a presidential appointment. Biko, receive your BUHARI award and stop making unnecessary explanations!” Seun Kuti taunted on Instagram.
Just a few hours earlier, Kemi Filani had reported that Seun Kuti had ridiculed Nigerians, including singer Davido, filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, and comedian Ayo Makun, for accepting national honours from President Muhammadu Buhari. The singer, recently released from prison, mocked those who received national awards despite their continuous criticism of the government.
Seun Kuti questioned whether no one would reject the honours based on principles or if the government had miraculously transformed overnight. He pointed out the irony of individuals who vocally criticize the government as the worst yet willingly accepting awards from that same government. He challenged them to clarify their stance and questioned their commitment to their principles.
Half of the people criticizing this government as the worst thing ever are going to collect awards in Abuja from the same government? No one will reject it on principle. Or has Buhari suddenly become legitimate? Just let me know, I’m asking for a presidential candidate like that. In the next three and a half years, we’ll witness the same dance all over again. What do you stand for?” Seun Kuti passionately wrote on Instagram.
