Nollywood actress Sonia Ogiri has added a new feather to her cap—she’s now officially a citizen of the United States of America.

The film star made the announcement via her Instagram page, posting photos of herself at the U.S. Department of Quality Home.

Sonia Ogiri becomes US citizen, and though initially hesitant to make the news public, she finally shared her joy, saying:

An American CITIZEN! It took me time to want to make this public. You want to hear my story about this journey? @viviansparkle00 @therealdianaokhiria love you girls—even my less than 1-month-old baby came ohhh.”

The emotional post quickly drew congratulatory messages from her Nollywood colleagues.

Tonto Dikeh commented, “Congratulations my dear,” while Susan Peters, Anita Joseph, Rachael Okonkwo, and Paschaline Alex also shared their excitement. Veteran actress Rita Edochie added, “Chai!! Congratulations nnem oo,” and Angela Okorie wrote a touching note, calling Sonia’s win well-deserved and encouraging her to soar even higher.

Sonia Ogiri becomes US citizen, joining a growing number of Nigerian entertainers now holding U.S. citizenship. Earlier this year, dancer Korra Obidi was sworn in as a U.S. citizen alongside other immigrants and proudly shared the moment with fans.

In February, popular blogger and former singer Tunde Ednut also became a citizen and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from former U.S. President Joe Biden.

Other Nigerian celebrities who have reached the same milestone include actor Gbenro Ajibade, who credited God for the blessing; singer Lamboginny, who couldn’t hold back tears after officially becoming a citizen; and Uche Jombo, who celebrated the citizenship status years after marrying her American husband.

Actor Osinachi also shared his excitement after finally securing his U.S. green card. In a bold statement, he declared he would no longer set foot in Nigeria, daring anyone who sees him back in the country to “bill him.”

Sonia’s update marks not just a personal achievement, but also reflects a larger trend among Nigerian entertainers establishing deeper roots abroad.
