Special Spesh, the hypeman of Nigerian music star Davido, has taken to Instagram to throw shade at Grammy winner Tyla after Davido’s loss at the 66th Academy Awards.
Davido, who was nominated for three Grammy categories, lost the Best African Music Performance award to Tyla for her song “Water.”
In his Instagram post, Special Spesh expressed his disapproval of external influence on Afrobeats and Afro-fusion, particularly from Americans. He claimed that Americans tend to want a part and control when things gain massive attention. He went on to shade Tyla’s Grammy-winning song “Water,” describing it as a song about squirting that won over Davido, Burna Boy, and Asake.
We won’t give you the power to dumb Afrobeats down or Afro-fusion or anything African. That’s (White) Americans’ problem! When things start to take over and get massive, they always want a part, then try to have a say, then try to control.”
While Davido did not secure a Grammy win this year, Special Spesh’s post suggests frustration over external influences on African music.
